Known for his stylized, precise, and graphic imagery, Howie Lee Weiss’s artwork has been reviewed in prominent publications such as Art in America, The Boston Globe, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and The Baltimore Sun.
Weiss was raised in a working-class coal-mining town in northeastern Pennsylvania, with the sophisticated and elegant vacation resorts of the Pocono Mountains nearby. He earned his MFA from Yale University School of Art & Architecture and his BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA).
Weiss’s iconic drawings have been exhibited in galleries across Baltimore, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC. Recent exhibitions include En Masse - Ensembles, Sets, and Variations: The Art of Howie Lee Weiss at Goya Contemporary Gallery in Baltimore, MD, and a 2024 Exhibition at MICA’s Decker Gallery in Baltimore, MD. His work has also been displayed in various venues throughout Italy. In Japan, Weiss lectured with the Keisho Art Association alongside an exhibit showcasing his extensive, free-style sketchbook practice.
As a professor, Weiss has influenced countless students. Until his recent retirement, Weiss oversaw the Senior Thesis Program at MICA, coordinated studio programming, the celebrated Artist-at-Noon Lecture Series, and co-directed the Summer Intensive Abroad program in Italy. He has received the Trustee’s Award for Excellence in Teaching at MICA twice.
In addition to his work at MICA, Weiss has served as a Visiting Professor at Princeton University and the AICA New York Studio Program. He has lectured and served as a critic at numerous institutions, including Vassar College, the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, the University of Pennsylvania, Moore College of Art, the University of Connecticut, and the (now closed) Corcoran College of Art.
