Baltimore, MD — Goya Contemporary Gallery is pleased to announce Paul Daniel: Altered Course, an exhibition of kinetic sculpture by Baltimore-based artist Paul Daniel, on view October 9 through November 20, 2026.
Altered Course brings together a selection of Daniel’s modestly scaled kinetic works, offering an intimate encounter with ideas that also animate his larger outdoor public sculptures. At the heart of Daniel’s practice is an interest in movement, balance, transformation, and the shifting relationship between sculpture and its environment. In these works, motion is not simply an effect, but an essential element of the artist’s thought process, and by extension, the viewer’s experience.
Within the gallery, Daniel’s kinetic sculptures invite close observation and engagement. Their interactive movement continually alters the viewer’s perception of form, space, and material. As the works are activated, their relationships to one another shift in turn. The exhibition offers an opportunity to experience, at a more intimate scale, the spatial and perceptual questions that inform Daniel’s monumental public works.
The title Altered Course speaks to a continual state of change. A sculpture in motion is never quite the same from one moment to the next; its trajectory, orientation, and relationship to its surroundings are perpetually shifting. The phrase also evokes the unexpected turns that shape our own journeys through life—moments when circumstances, chance, or choice redirect us toward an unforeseen path. Daniel embraces this sense of instability and possibility, creating works that resist a fixed or singular viewpoint, and instead unfold through time.
The exhibition also considers the passage from the monumental to the intimate. Daniel’s outdoor sculptures occupy public spaces and engage the movement of people through the landscape, while the works presented at Goya Contemporary Gallery bring that same spirit of motion into a more concentrated setting. Freed from the scale of the public realm, these sculptures allow viewers to consider the mechanisms, systems, rhythms, and subtle shifts that make movement itself a sculptural material.
Paul Daniel: Altered Course encourages viewers to slow down and look again—to experience sculpture not as a static object, but as something continually evolving, responding to its surroundings, and inviting us to consider our own changing trajectories.
